When should you regrip your clubs?

Your club will show the sign by itself. Weaken grip on your club, and normal wear and tears are the signs that the time of regripping has come. Another sign to observe is when the grips become slippery.

The golf club grips are made to last for years. But, if you use them more frequently like two or three times a week, the damages could occur fast.

The general rule of thumb is you should replace your golf grips every 6 to 8 months if you are using them 3 to 4 times a week. If the frequency is lesser, i.e., 1 to 2 times a week, the grips will stay perfect for years.

Why Should you regrip your golf clubs?

  1. To have an enhanced grip on the club.

We all know that a new and quality grip will give a good grip on your club. So, if the existing grip has lost its grooves or if the surface has become softer, you should think about replacing golf grip.

Although you will find many grips that are specially designed to enhance the squeeze on your club, any new club grip will be enough if you are a hobbyist player.

  1. To restore comfort and Efficacy.

As we discussed earlier, an old club grip will start to get damaged, and it will become harder for you to have proper control over the club. Also, handling a plain grip will require much effort, and it will also impact your performance for sure.

So, the second reason to replace your golf grips is to have that tackiness and ease in your hands.

  1. Finally, to improve the game.

The grips have direct impacts on your overall performance in the game. An old, slippery, and worn grip will make you uncomfortable during the game.

Because you have to hold your club tightly, it will increase the tension between your hands and wrist. Believe me. This is the worst mistake you can make when you are playing as a beginner or even a professional.

In simple words, when you grip your club with lighter hands, it becomes easier to have that rhythm and efficiency.

Which are the best Golf Grips to buy?

Well, that depends totally on your choice. In the market or on online stores, you will find numerous options to choose from. Depending on your budgets, requirements, styles, and the available brands, you can pick various types of grips for you.

It is not hard to do it yourself. Replacing golf grips is something you will find interesting if you love to do DIY things. So, here is a brief process to do it effectively and have amazing results.

Note: The process is pretty simple to follow. However, I will suggest you try this process on a single club. See if you can do it. If you can, then do it with all the clubs you want to regrip.

Things you will need:

  1. A vice with Shaft Protector
  2. New Grip/Grips
  3. White Spirit
  4. Solvent
  5. Double-sided tape
  6. Sharp Knife/blade/cutter
  7. A cloth

Step 1: Remove the old grip

Most of the grips are attached to the clubs using glues or tapes. So, if that is the case with your club, you will not be able to remove it just by a simple pull.

In order to remove the old grip from your club, get a sharp blade, cutter, or knife and cut the grip vertically. Now, peel off the grip and make your club free from it.

Step 2: Clean the Surface

Because you now have to apply new tape, make sure to clean the club surface. For that, you can use a white spirit and a piece of cloth. Just dab the fabric inside the spirit and rub the club surface until the last part of glue or tape is removed.

Step 3: Tape it Up

Measure the area of the club to be covered with your grip. Now, start applying the double-sided tape from that measured end and wrap it entirely till the top.

Means, you should come from bottom to top while taping your club. Make sure to keep some extra tape hanging on the top. It will help to move your new grip inside the club effectively. Just cover the head of your club with this extra tape from all directions.

Note: Do not put the two-sided tape on the existing tape. This is a wrong practice. It can work, but you will have to put extra effort into making your club get inside the new grip.

Step 4: Fit the new grip inside

This one is the primary step that requires extra care and patience. You have to place your club in the vice. Make sure to use a shaft protector before you tight your club inside the vice.

Alternatively, you can place your club on a soft surface upside down to slide in the grip.

The most important part here is to use a solvent. Make sure to pour it on the double-sided tape and inside the grip too. It will help you to slide the grip on the tape smoothly.

Step 5: Align the Grip and Clean Up

Now, when the grip is applied and slides inside the club, make sure to align it properly in the way it should be. In some time, it will become hard to do so because the tape will attach both the surface tightly. So, just finish everything up and get your club out from the vice.

You are now finished with the process. I hope you will find it easy to follow. I would suggest you watch some YouTube videos and have visual information about the same for enhanced preciseness of this process.

Should you go to an expert to get your grip replaced?

Yes, getting this thing done from an expert will be much more convenient for you. Also, instead of paying for all these required items, you can pay some amount to an expert.

An average cost a professional will charge from you is between 2 to 5$ for each golf club. This price is affordable if we look at the efforts we have to put in.

However, if you love to do DIY things like me, just follow the steps, and you are good to go.
